Chapter 6

Todd leaned against the nurses’ station. He heard Anna yawn and gave her a sympathetic look. He knew the feeling. For the first time in… he even didn’t know how long, the day had been slow. It was good because that meant no one was out there getting hurt, but it was bad because it made the day drag on and all he wanted to do was get wrapped up in Ginger’s arms. Anna yawned again.

“Jeez. You’re making me tired,” Todd teased.

Anna smiled. “Sorry. We have three nurses and four doctors here and it’s like all is well in the world outside. How’d this happen?”

Todd snickered. “Dumb luck, I guess.”

He pushed himself away from the counter and left Anna to finish what she was working on. He went to Grant’s office. He peeked inside to see if Grant was busy on the phone. He was typing away on his computer.

“Anything you need help with?” Todd asked.

Grant looked up. “Hey. Not really. But thanks. I’m just finishing up boring financial stuff. All quiet out there?”

Todd snorted. “Understatement of the century. We were kind of overstaffed. How’d that happen?”

“Well, Roger came in mistakenly and I thought it’d be nice to have coverage for the first time.” Grant laughed. “Apparently, I didn’t account for the fact that no one would be sick today and there would be no accidents.”

“Apparently!” he said. “So, I have some exciting news.”

Grant arched an eyebrow. “Do tell.”

“Yesterday, when we got home from your place, we both said I love you.”

“To each other?” Grant teased.

Todd laughed as he took the seat in front of Grant’s desk. “Yes, to each other. I never thought I’d love anyone this much. When my last girlfriend and I broke up, I was devastated, but Ginger surpassed all my expectations. She is a blessing for me and I owe all gratitude to you.”

Grant smiled.

“I was happy to set you guys up.” He grabbed his pen and lightly tapped it on the corner of his desk. He then tossed it down and sat up straighter. “Since the ER is dead, you can go home, if you want.”

Todd grinned. “I can.”

Grant nodded. “I haven’t gotten any messages stating that help is needed in another department. Go and enjoy this time with Ginger. If we get too busy, we’ll just call you back, right?”

Todd shook his head. “Not a chance. If I’m going, I’m going. And there better not be any interruptions.”

Grant chuckled. He knew Todd was teasing. Todd was just enthusiastic to get a chance to have the night off when he thought he’d be working until the wee hours of the morning.

“Thank you,” he said.

“My pleasure,” Grant said.

Todd hurriedly went to change his clothes. When he bypassed the nurses’ station, Anna’s jaw dropped.

“Really? You’re leaving all this fun?”

He laughed. “You can call me if you need to. I’m going as fast as I can before Grant changes his mind.”

He meant that, too. He couldn’t wait to get back to Ginger’s house.

He tossed his dirty scrubs into the back of his car and hopped into the driver’s seat.
